About UWIN

UWIN is a transition independence program, created by UIB (Utah Industries for the Blind), geared to help youth with visual impairments (ages 16-21) gain independence through experience.  The purpose of UWIN is to provide training and preparation for job experience and to assist students in developing various skills, including independent living and recreation. UWIN stands for Utah Work Introduction Network and is in collaboration with the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind (USDB) and the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DSBVI).

Our UWIN program is a six week program during the first part of the summer (June 02-July 12 2024).  Participants are provided a one of a kind experience to give independence a try while living away from home with trained staff and participant roommates. During these six weeks participants will spend the first few days in training learning how to cook and clean at home as well as orientation and mobility training to get to and from their jobs. During the remaining program participants will get to practice their training firsthand by working at their job and of course – earning a paycheck! Jobs are paired toward the participants interests as much as possible.

Of course, it’s not all just work with no play! Participants will have the opportunity to go on planned group outings and activities. Past group activities have included a multi-city scavenger hunt, ropes course, river rafting, camping, waterfall repelling, trips to the mall, going out for ice cream, and much more. Students are also given free time to go to approved places in small groups once they have passed the route off with an orientation and mobility specialist.

Our exciting program goal is to prepare students for life by letting them take a test drive at independence. We strive to empower students to take charge of their future ….
